"Well you could argue...that without adequate intelligence during the Cold War, we wouldn't be here today."

Potential DestructionIf the US had not used spies, the Soviet Union, knowing things about the US from their spies, would have attacked and likely bombed America. If they had used nukes, America would now be gone entirely. If both countries had not used spies, war might not have happened, but likely both countries would have bombed each other and the world would be a very different place. Spies were integral for the continued existence of America.
If it had not been for intelligence, neither the United States nor the Soviet Union would be around, because both countries would have released their atomic bombs and would have destroyed many countries and taken many innocent lives. However, both countries had a mutual agreement to not release their atomic bombs because they would destroy the world if they did. The safety of Americans greatly depended on the use of spies because the spies helped to keep Americans alive and safe.

Nuclear Weapon Check-insSpies in the Cold War served to keep an eye on the Soviet Union and prevent a nuclear war. Espionage, while used to check up on military movements in regional wars, was mostly used to stop war between the two countries, or at least insure the US won. A lot of intelligence gathering was used to check up on the development of nuclear weapons and technology for space exploration.
"We will always apply the same principles of collective security, prudent caution, and superior weaponry that enabled us to peacefully prevail in the long cold war against the Soviet Union."
